Seed pencils: buying, storage and planting questions
A seed pencil should be selected as both a writing tool and a later planting activity. Check both parts of that promise before choosing it for a school, event or corporate order.

Check that it is actually a seed pencil
Recycled newspaper describes the pencil body. Plantable describes a seed-bearing component. They are not interchangeable terms. Confirm that the product has a seed capsule or another clearly identified plantable part, and ask for the seed variety supplied with the batch. Do not infer it from the colour of the capsule or a generic catalogue photograph.
Keep the writing tool practical
Ask about the pencil dimensions and sharpening guidance for the chosen model. For classroom kits, check the users' ages and how products will be supervised. A small capsule is not a toy or food item. For branding, confirm where a logo can fit without covering information that recipients need to read.
Store the batch with the seeds in mind
Keep the supplied instructions with the products. Ask for storage guidance and any recommended use-by period for the batch. Protect unplanted products from damp conditions and excessive heat. If you plan to hold stock before an event, include that delay in the discussion with the supplier rather than checking only the delivery date.
Give instructions instead of a growth promise
Follow the supplied directions for the seed-bearing part and the named seed variety. Planting depth, light and watering need to suit those seeds and local conditions. A simple instruction card can explain the next steps without promising that every pencil will germinate. For an organised activity, keep a record of the variety and planting date so participants can understand what they are growing.
