Plantable stationery: which part can you plant?
Plantable stationery contains a designated seed-bearing component. The name does not mean that an entire notebook, its binding or every part of a pencil should go into soil.

Identify the seed-bearing component
A notebook may use seed paper for its cover while its writing pages and binding have a different construction. A bookmark can be a single seed-paper piece. A seed pencil can carry a capsule at one end. Read the individual description and keep any supplied instruction card. If the component is unclear, ask before planting rather than guessing from its appearance.
Confirm the seeds and instructions
Growing requirements depend on the seed variety. Ask which seeds are included in the batch and follow their instructions for soil, planting depth, light and watering. There is no one watering schedule that suits every seed or climate. Storage conditions, seed age and the eventual growing environment all influence germination; a living outcome cannot be guaranteed.
Separate the other components
Remove binding, clips, backing or packaging that is not identified as plantable. A product can combine paper with adhesive, coating or metal components. Keep those out of the planting medium unless the supplier explicitly confirms otherwise. Check local disposal options for the remaining components rather than applying a blanket compostable claim.
Make gifting instructions part of the brief
For an event, ask whether recipients have somewhere suitable to grow the seeds. Include clear instructions and the seed name, and agree how products will be stored before distribution. School activities need suitable adult supervision and age-appropriate items. A well-explained planting activity is more useful than an attractive gift whose recipient does not know what to do next.
